NHSBT Genotypes 77,000 Blood Donors in First Step Toward Precision-Matched Transfusions

July 30, 2025

The United Kingdom’s NHS Blood and Transplant has genotyped more than 77,000 blood donors as part of a major effort to enable precision-matched transfusions. Through the STRIDES National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) BioResource study, the agency aims to reduce transfusion-related side effects by matching blood more precisely to recipients. NHSBT has already identified dozens of donors with rare blood types and expects the total to rise to several hundred as analysis continues.
