Dennis J. Hlavinka Travel Grant

The Dennis J. Hlavinka Travel Grant honors the legacy of a pioneering biomedical engineer whose innovations advanced blood safety and component collection, shaping transfusion medicine practices and standards worldwide.

Reflecting Dennis' legacy of innovation, mentorship and dedication to improving patient and donor care, this grant supports early-career biomedical engineers in attending the AABB Annual Meeting to expand their knowledge, build professional networks, and gain insights that will help drive future advances in transfusion medicine and biotherapies.

Travel Grant Details

The Dennis J. Hlavinka Travel Grant is awarded annually to one (1) recipient and provides $2,000 to help offset expenses associated with attending the AABB Annual Meeting, including travel, lodging, childcare and other related costs.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a biomedical engineer within seven (7) years of completing their terminal degree or entering their professional career.
  • Demonstrate interest and commitment to developing innovative biomedical engineering solutions to advance patient and donor care.

About Dennis J. Hlavinka

Dennis J. HlavinkaDennis J. Hlavinka earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University and a master's degree from the University of Texas. His career spanned nearly five decades, the majority of which he spent with Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies and its predecessor organizations. A pioneering biomedical engineer, Dennis was named as a co-inventor on hundreds of U.S. and international patents related to blood component separation, automated fluid handling and medical device technologies.

In 2016, Dennis was named a Terumo Fellow in recognition of his significant contributions to medical technology innovation and patient care. He was also the recipient of the 2015 AABB Dale A. Smith Memorial Award for his groundbreaking work applying technology to advance transfusion medicine.

Dennis is remembered not only for his career achievements, but also for his commitment to developing future generations of engineers and scientists through mentorship. His influence continues through the many professionals he guided throughout their careers and through the lasting impact of his work to improve the lives of patients and donors worldwide.
