How Artificial Intelligence is Transforming Transfusion Medicine

Historically, clinicians have relied on in-hospital laboratory testing to guide blood transfusion decisions. Today, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are transforming the field of blood and biotherapies, from donor recruitment and patient matching to therapy development and clinical decision making.

In a recent multinational study published in The Lancet Digital Health, investigators developed AI-based machine learning models that accurately forecast prehospital blood transfusion needs using readily available data, including injury patterns, vital signs and prehospital medications. The models outperformed conventional methods for estimating blood loss and demonstrated the potential to help trauma teams mobilize critical blood products and other resources.
