
Julia Z. Xu, MD, MScGH, is an assistant professor of medicine in the division of classical hematology and the Vascular Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh. She specializes in the care of adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) and other red blood cell disorders. She completed a combined internal medicine-global health residency training at Duke University, where she studied the trajectory of renal function decline in SCD, obtained her master of science in global health (MScGH) degree and worked internationally as a Fogarty International Center research fellow.
Xu completed her hematology fellowship training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), then joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh. She has led several early-phase clinical trials of pharmacotherapies for patients with SCD, and her research focuses on optimizing the treatment of chronic anemia in SCD. Xu’s lab studies red blood cells and hemorheology, working with local and international partners to develop biomarkers to advance the care of people with SCD globally.
Transfusion is AABB’s scholarly, peer-reviewed monthly journal, publishing the latest on technological advances, clinical research and controversial issues related to transfusion medicine, blood banking, biotherapies and tissue transplantation. Access of Transfusion is free to all AABB members.
