
Matthew S. Karafin, MD, MS, is a clinical professor in the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He currently serves as director of the Blood Bank, Apheresis Services, and the Blood Bank Fellowship program at the University of North Carolina Hospital. He is responsible for the education of fellows, resident and medical students, and is also an active mentor to multiple young investigators locally and nationally via the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study (REDS) research program and the AABB Mentoring Program.
Additionally, Karafin is the current chair of the College of American Pathologists: Transfusion, Apheresis, and Cellular Therapy Committee (TACT). His current research interests involve clinical studies investigating important issues affecting red blood cell transfusion practice, particularly related to refrigerated storage, alloimmunization, hemolytic transfusion reactions and donor red cell quality.
Transfusion is AABB’s scholarly, peer-reviewed monthly journal, publishing the latest on technological advances, clinical research and controversial issues related to transfusion medicine, blood banking, biotherapies and tissue transplantation. Access of Transfusion is free to all AABB members.
