In June 2025, Howard University opened the first-of-its-kind Center for Sickle Cell Disease in Washington, D.C.—and the third in the United States— making significant strides in sickle cell specialized care in the region. Developed through a partnership among Howard University Hospital, the Faculty Practice Plan and the Center for Sickle Cell Disease, the 7,500 square-foot clinical space is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD). This groundbreaking center offers same-day appointments for pain crises, infusion therapy, mental health support, personalized treatment plans and preventive and urgent care.
Transfusion is AABB’s scholarly, peer-reviewed monthly journal, publishing the latest on technological advances, clinical research and controversial issues related to transfusion medicine, blood banking, biotherapies and tissue transplantation. Access of Transfusion is free to all AABB members.
