Jeffery Taubenberger Named Acting Director of NIAID

April 29, 2025

Jeffery Taubenberger, MD, PhD, a virologist known for sequencing the genome of the 1918 influenza pandemic, has been named the acting director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Taubenberger has been an intramural researcher at NIAID since joining the agency in 2006. He previously served as chair of the Department of Molecular Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.

He replaces Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH, an HIV/AIDS researcher who was placed on administrative leave on March 31 as part of the Trump administration’s dismissal of public health officials. Marrazzo assumed the role of NIAID director in 2023 after the departure of the agency’s longtime director, Anthony Fauci, MD.
