Florida Advances Bill to Expand Access to Unapproved Stem Cell Therapies
May 07, 2025
The Florida House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill (
SB 1768) that aims to improve access to stem cell therapies not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The bill now returns to the Florida Senate for final passage.
If enacted, the bill would authorize licensed physicians to perform unapproved stem cell therapies, provided the treatments are within their scope of practice and focus on orthopedics, wound care or pain management. The legislation also requires that all stem cells used in such therapies be obtained from facilities registered with FDA and certified or accredited by designated organizations, including AABB.
The legislation also includes additional safeguards: physicians must follow current good manufacturing practices, disclose the unapproved status of treatments in advertisements and obtain informed consent from patients.
