NHTSA and DoD to Launch $30M Prehospital Transfusion Initiative
May 21, 2025
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is partnering with the Department of Defense (DoD) to invest $30 million in a nationwide effort to expand access to prehospital blood transfusion. The initiative, announced by NHTSA’s Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser during the Road to Zero Annual Meeting, seeks to establish at least 25 new demonstration programs across the U.S. throughout the next three years.
This partnership aims to advance the goals of the Road to Zero Coalition, an intra-agency partnership led by the National Safety Council, which seeks to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2050. NHTSA plans to share further updates on the initiative and related efforts in the coming months.
