AABB is urging members to take action in support of new bipartisan legislation that would expand access to palliative blood transfusions for terminally ill patients receiving care through the Medicare hospice benefit. Many patients in end-of-life care currently face barriers to accessing blood transfusions, which can provide significant symptom relief and improve quality of life.
The Improving Access to Transfusion Care for Hospice Patients Act of 2025 (S.1936), introduced in the United States Senate by Sens. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), would establish a demonstration program to create a separate Medicare payment for blood transfusions provided as part of hospice care.
AABB strongly supports this bill and encourages members to contact their senators in support of S.1936. By urging policymakers to advance this legislation, members can help improve care for some of the most vulnerable patients.
