French Scientists Identify New Blood Group

June 24, 2025

Scientists at the Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), the French national blood service, have identified a new blood group 15 years after receiving a sample from a female patient on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe (an overseas department and region of France). The woman is the only known carrier of the newly discovered group, called “Gwada negative.” The International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) formally recognized the blood group at its 35th regional conference in Milan earlier this month.
