Colombian Blood Bank First in South America to Earn AABB Quality Certificate

June 26, 2025

The national blood bank of the Colombian Red Cross (Cruz Roja Colombiana) recently became the first blood bank in South America — and the first Spanish-speaking facility outside of Mexico — to earn the AABB Quality Certificate.

During a virtual celebration, Dra. Judith Carvajal de Álvarez, president of the Cruz Roja Colombiana, introduced key members of the blood bank staff, recognized the leadership of Dr. Adriana del Pilar Urbina and celebrated the collaborative efforts that led to this achievement. Karen Milks, MLS(ASCP)SBB, AABB’s quality specialist consultant, highlighted the certification as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to high standards in donor and patient care.

The certificate, valid for two years, will be displayed at the blood center and featured on AABB’s website.

About AABB’s Quality Certificate Program

The AABB Quality Certificate Program is available to facilities outside the United States and recognizes organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and quality based on AABB’s internationally recognized Fundamental Standards for Blood Collection and Transfusion, which are also available in Spanish.

Participating facilities receive support from AABB specialists throughout the self-assessment process and, upon successful completion, receive a two-year certificate as a symbol of their dedication to donor and patient safety.
