The United States Senate confirmed Susan Monarez, PhD, to serve as the next director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), following a party-line vote on Tuesday. She is the first CDC director to require Senate confirmation under a 2023 law.

Monarez previously served as CDC’s principal deputy director and held the role of acting director from January to March. Before joining CDC, she was deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). She has also held senior positions at the White House, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Council.
