The Indian Red Cross Society, Ahmedabad District Branch, has successfully been recertified under the second edition of AABB’s Fundamental Standards for Blood Collection and Transfusion, maintaining its quality certificate designation. The Ahmedabad facility is the first in the world to achieve certification under these standards.
Led by Vishvas Amin, MBBS, and the quality team of Jhalak Patel, MD, MBBS, and Palak Panchal, the blood bank completed its recertification on April 10, reflecting its continued commitment to quality and safety in blood collection and transfusion practices. AABB’s Christine Bales, BS, MLS, I (ASCP) CQA (ASQ), joined facility staff virtually for an award ceremony this morning.
Designed for facilities outside of the United States, AABB’s Fundamental Standards provide an entry point for implementing a quality systems approach in blood banks and transfusion services.
The standards are built on AABB’s Quality Systems Essentials and outline core requirements for leadership, documented policies and procedures, equipment qualification and maintenance, and staff training and competency. They also establish expectations across the full scope of facility operations, require facilities to monitor performance through the identification and assessment of deviations, and participate in internal and external assessments.
