June Issue of AABB News Explores Advances and Challenges in SCD Care

June 22, 2026

The June issue of AABB News examines the evolving landscape of sickle cell disease (SCD) care, highlighting advances in treatment, transfusion support and patient-centered approaches that are improving outcomes for people living with SCD.

The cover story explores the challenges of pregnancy for patients with SCD through the perspectives of Doreen Rowell-Tetteh, a mother living with SCD, and two specialists, highlighting the importance of transfusion support and multidisciplinary care. A second feature examines how clinicians and patients navigate treatment decisions, discussing the benefits and limitations of available therapies and the growing emphasis on individualized care.

Additional articles this month feature Amy Cohen, the first person with SCD to complete a marathon; Tara King, whose mother's experience with SCD inspired her career in blood banking; and an interview with the founders of a new digital health platform designed to support sickle cell warriors. The issue also includes a preview of the 2026 AABB Annual Meeting and a conversation with Evan M. Bloch, MBChB, MS, the editor-in-chief of the new edition of the AABB Technical Manual.
