First Blood Center in Pakistan Earns AABB Quality Certificate

The Blood Center at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) in Karachi received AABB's  Certification in Fundamental Standards: Blood Banking and Transfusion Services on July 9. The center, directed by Uzma Ata, MBBS, MD, became the first in Pakistan to earn the designation.

Originally established as a hospital blood bank in 2003, the DUHS Blood Center was expanded in 2022 into a regional blood center under Pakistan's National Safe Blood Transfusion Program. The center now serves as a regional hub, providing blood inventory, patient testing and other transfusion services to affiliated hospital blood banks and thalassemia centers across Karachi.
