AABB Announces Research Selected for 2026 Annual Meeting Plenary Oral Abstract Session

August 19, 2026

AABB is pleased to announce the research selected for inclusion in the Plenary Oral Abstract Session at the upcoming 2026 AABB Annual Meeting, to be held Oct. 17-19 in Atlanta.

The Plenary Oral Abstract Session is the session reserved at each year’s AABB Annual Meeting to present the research that has been deemed the most important of the year in the blood and biotherapies field. The Selection of Abstracts Committee reviews hundreds of scientific abstracts in the months leading up to the AABB Annual Meeting, selects those of high scientific merit for inclusion at the meeting, then chooses the best and most important to be presented during the Plenary Oral Abstract Session. These abstracts typically represent critical, practice-changing research – science that may ultimately lead to advancements in donor and patient safety.

The abstracts chosen for this year’s Plenary Oral Abstract Session are:

          •    B cell Dysregulation and a Novel Process of Red Blood Cell Ingestion in Sickle Cell Disease: Implications for Alloimmunization, presented by Krystalyn E. Hudson, PhD

          •    HIV Incidence and Residual Transfusion Transmission Risk After Implementation of Individual Donor Assessment in the United States: Analysis from the TTIMS Program, presented by Eduard Grebe, PhD

          •    Safety of Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Collection in Individuals with Sickle Cell Trait, presented by Brian J. Carney, MD

          •    The Role of Anemia in Cancer Metastasis, presented by Matthew Z. Madden, MD, PhD

          •    Trogocytosis as a Mechanism of RhIG-Mediated Immune Suppression: Implications for Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn Prevention, presented by Yoelys Cruz Leal, Sr., PhD

“It is an honor for a researcher to have their work selected for the AABB Annual Meeting’s Plenary Oral Abstract Session,” said Christopher Tormey, MD, chair of the AABB Selection of Abstracts Committee. “This year’s session will comprise presentations on excellently conducted research studies on some of the most important research in blood and biotherapies. These studies are likely to have an important impact on the field and are likely to be among the most talked-about abstracts this year. I encourage all attendees to join us for this session in Atlanta.”

AABB congratulates the researchers whose abstracts were chosen for this year’s Plenary Oral Abstract Session and looks forward to seeing them present their findings in October.
