Florida Reports More Locally Acquired DENV Cases

The Florida Department of Health reported 18 new cases of locally acquired dengue virus (DENV) during the week of Aug. 16-22, bringing the state’s 2026 total to 41 locally acquired DENV cases. The cases have been reported in four counties: Hillsborough (30), Miami-Dade (seven), Pinellas (three) and Palm Beach (one). Forty cases have been serotyped by PCR; 38 were DENV-2 and two were DENV-3.

Information for Blood Collectors

AABB’s Transfusion Transmitted Diseases Committee will continue to monitor passive reports of DENV.  There is currently no FDA guidance regarding blood center autochthonous dengue response.

Blood providers in affected regions should maintain communication with state and local public health departments, closely monitor post-donation information regarding febrile illnesses, and may consider regional alterations in platelet pathogen inactivation throughput when this technology is in use.
