Federal Funding to Expand Prehospital Whole-Blood Transfusions in Rural Colorado

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced a $169.6 million investment through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program to expand health care services in rural Colorado.

Among the funded projects is an effort to expand access to whole-blood transfusions before patients reach the hospital. The initiative will support training for rural emergency medical services providers across a network reaching 39 Colorado counties.

The $169.6 million investment supports 91 grantees and about 250 projects as part of Colorado's fiscal year 2026 award under the program.
