Transfusion Print-on-Demand Member Benefit FAQs

Transfusion, AABB's monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal, transitioned to an online-focused format beginning with the January 2026 issue.

As always, Transfusion is dedicated to publishing critical research covering all aspects of transfusion medicine, blood banking and biotherapies. A digital subscription to Transfusion remains an important benefit of AABB membership, and AABB members will have the option to continue to receive a monthly printed version of the journal for an additional price.

Below, AABB answers frequently asked questions about this transition.

Why is the transition to an online-focused journal happening?

  • Usage data shows journal content is consumed at the article levels through databases and search engines, like PubMed and Google, instead of in the traditional issue format.
  • The convenience of digital readership and usage spurred the print-to-online migration, especially in the past five years.
  • These user trends present an opportunity for AABB to reinvest the funds dedicated to supporting print into new journal initiatives and member benefits.
  • It's eco-friendly. Reducing landfill waste is sensible and desirable.

How does the print-on-demand program work?
