As we prepare to gather in Atlanta for the 2026 AABB Annual Meeting, I have been reflecting on the privilege of serving as AABB president. It has been an honor to work alongside professionals who share a commitment to quality, safety and innovation in blood and biotherapies. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and hopeful about the work ahead.
Our field is changing rapidly. The need for blood remains constant, but the ways we collect, process and transfuse it continue to evolve. Cell and gene therapies are moving into broader clinical practice, while artificial intelligence, automation, genomic matching and prehospital transfusion are creating new possibilities for improving patient care. These advances also raise important questions about evidence, access, quality and safety.
AABB helps our community navigate these changes. Through standards, accreditation, education, knowledge exchange and advocacy, the Association supports the responsible adoption of new technologies and practices. This work is essential to ensuring that scientific advances are implemented safely.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my presidency has been the opportunity to strengthen AABB's international relationships. I have represented AABB at meetings and events in Mexico, Colombia and the Middle East, where I engaged in discussions with colleagues from around the world. These conversations confirmed the value of sustained collaboration across borders. Our relationships with the International Society of Blood Transfusion and with professional associations and institutions in Latin America and the Middle East allow us to exchange knowledge, learn from different models of care and pursue shared goals. They strengthen both the global blood and biotherapies community and AABB.
Looking ahead, AABB is well positioned to help our field evaluate and adopt emerging technologies responsibly. Our success will depend on the expertise and engagement of our members and on our willingness to learn from one another.
As I conclude my presidency, I am deeply grateful to AABB's Board of Directors, staff, volunteer leaders and members. The volunteers who develop standards, the assessors who strengthen quality, the researchers who advance science and the professionals who sustain the blood supply all make AABB's work possible.
It has been a tremendous privilege to serve as your president. Thank you for your trust, partnership and commitment. I am confident that AABB will continue to lead our field for years ahead.
