Health officials in New York are investigating a possible case of locally acquired chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in a Long Island woman, according to recent reporting. The woman reported no previous travel before testing CHIKV-positive in August. If confirmed, this would represent the first case of locally transmitted CHIKV in New York.
In response to ongoing international CHIVK outbreaks, the New York State Department of Health issued a health advisory with precautions for New Yorkers planning international travel. Officials noted that the overall risk of local transmission remains low.
AABB’s emerging infectious diseases fact sheets contain additional information about CHIKV and other infectious diseases relevant to donor and patient health and safety.
