AABB Celebrates 56 Years of National Blood Donor Month

January 05, 2026

AABB joins blood collectors throughout the United States in celebrating the 56th anniversary of National Blood Donor Month (NBDM) and honoring those who selflessly donate blood and platelets for patients in need.

Although blood donations typically decrease during the winter months, the need for blood remains constant. Since 1970, the blood community has observed NBDM in January with the goal of increasing blood and platelet donations during this period because a reduction in donor turnout can put the nation’s blood inventory at a critical low.

As part of its NBDM celebration, AABB members receive complimentary access to a series of on-demand educational programs focusing on sustaining a diverse donor base amid shifting demographics, recruiting 2SLGBTQIA+ donors and collaborating with community partners to design effective donor recruitment videos. AABB is also sharing stories of blood donors to highlight the life-saving impact of blood donation.

Throughout the month, AABB will share a series of graphics about blood donation on its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages and encourages members to take advantage of these graphics in their own NBDM activities.
