New ‘PBM Column’ Explores Informed Consent

AABB’s Transfusion Safety and Patient Blood Management (TS/PBM) Subsection recently released the latest article in its “PBM Column” series, “Understanding Informed Consent in Transfusion Medicine.”

In the column, MaryAnn Sromoski, MSN, FNP-C, outlines five essential components of every informed consent discussion, explores considerations for blood donors and transfusion recipients, and discusses legal and ethical implications for health care professionals. She also examines familiar challenges that can compromise informed consent, including emergency situations, paternalism, knowledge gaps and poor documentation.
