Advancing Stem Cell Therapies
Meenakshi Banerjee, PhD, is an assistant professor (research-track) in the division of hematology and hematologic malignancies at the University of Utah, where she studies how blood cells function as regulators of inflammation in health and disease. Her research examines two interconnected areas: how megakaryocytes and platelets act as immune signaling cells that drive thrombo-inflammation and organ injury, and how hematopoietic stem cells respond to inflammatory stress to shape blood cell production. Her work focuses on developing strategies that improve transfusion practices, enhance transplant success and reduce complications in inflammatory and vascular diseases.
Banerjee received an AABB Foundation Early-Career Scientific Research Grant in 2024. Her project, “Elucidating the Role of IFITM3 in Hematopoietic Stem Cells During Inflammatory Stress,” aims to improve understanding of how inflammatory stress regulates hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) function to advance current stem cell transplantation strategies and transfusion biotherapies.
