The future of transfusion medicine and biotherapies will be defined not only by scientific innovation, but by our ability to build a globally connected, high-quality and equitable ecosystem of care. As cellular therapies, gene-modified products and next-generation biologics move from experimental to standard practice, the role of blood centers and transfusion services is rapidly expanding, along with the need for global alignment in standards, capabilities and access.

Across regions, our community is navigating this transformation in real time: strengthening foundational transfusion systems while preparing for the integration of advanced biotherapies. This dual mandate, maintaining excellence in blood safety while enabling the future of cell and gene therapies, will define the next decade of our field.

AABB is uniquely positioned to lead this evolution. As an international Association, we are advancing a global framework that integrates transfusion medicine and biotherapies through evidence-based standards, workforce development and strategic partnerships. Our objective is clear: to ensure that innovation is translated into safe, scalable and accessible care worldwide, not constrained by geography or infrastructure.

Global engagement is central to this effort. I look forward to participating in the 14th Colombian Congress and 20th Ibero-American Congress on Blood Banks, Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy, hosted by ACOBASMET in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, April 23–26. These forums are critical not only for sharing knowledge, but for aligning strategy, accelerating adoption of emerging technologies and preparing institutions for the operational realities of cellular therapy delivery.

Ensuring Safer Practices

In this issue of AABB News, we highlight how these priorities are being translated into action, with a focus on expanding access, strengthening systems and advancing safety, innovation and equity.

Our cover story examines the work of the Blood D.E.S.E.R.T. Coalition and the persistent challenges of ensuring timely, safe blood transfusion worldwide. In our Global Perspectives series, leaders from Asia and Latin America share strategies to address disparities and drive innovation. We also feature highlights from the 12th International Congress of the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion in Windhoek, Namibia, where global partners came together to strengthen systems and expand access to safer transfusion practices.

We also recognize the importance of language, culture and regional leadership in scaling impact. The AABB Spanish Language Subsection exemplifies how targeted engagement can strengthen standards, education and collaboration across Latin America, ensuring that global progress is locally relevant and sustainable.

As we look ahead, the challenge is not only to innovate, but to integrate—to build a cohesive global system where transfusion medicine and biotherapies evolve together, grounded in quality, equity and shared purpose.
