AABB Launches New Relationship Testing Training Series With Parentage Calculations Course

May 07, 2025

AABB is pleased to introduce a new self-paced online parentage calculations course designed as a tool to help laboratory scientists and forensic analysts strengthen their understanding of the statistical methods used to determine genetic parentage and other familial relationships. The module is the first offering in AABB’s new Relationship Testing Statistical Calculation Training series.

The module is divided into three units: Foundations in Parentage Calculations, Paternity Trio Calculations and Parentage Duo Calculations. Each unit includes multimedia content, downloadable audio files, unit handouts and practice worksheets. Learners can complete the 4- to 6-hour course at their own pace and convenience.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to perform parentage calculations, calculate likelihood ratios and the probability of relationship (W), and write reports that meet the AABB Standards for Relationship Testing Laboratories. The curriculum covers key topics such as Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bayes Theorem and prior probability.

AABB will release additional modules in the Relationship Testing Statistical Calculation Training series throughout the year as part of a broader certificate program. Introductory pricing and discounts for bulk orders are available. The course web page includes details on pricing, core faculty and CE information.

Learners should note that the Relationship Testing Statistical Calculation Training series and related Relationship Testing Collection Training module are optional educational offerings. Completion of these courses is not required by state or federal agencies, laws or regulations.
