    Dr. Vassallo is the Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of Vitalant, based in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was trained in Internal Medicine and Hematology/ Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Practicing Transfusion Medicine for 22 years, he previously spent 10 years as a hospitalist, administrator, and ACGME Program Director. Dr. Vassallo has served on numerous AABB committees, on the board of the Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion Collaborative and on editorial boards of transfusion medicine journals and textbooks, publishing over 90 chapters, articles and reviews.

    Kelly Castro is Manager of Vitalant’s West Division product quality testing laboratory, based in Mather, California. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and completed the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Training Program at Eisenhower Memorial Hospital. Kelly worked as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist for Community Blood Bank, Rancho Mirage for two years before moving to Vitalant in 2000. Having worked in the blood bank industry for 24 years, Kelly has experience performing and/or management of the following: transfusion work ups, infectious disease testing and blood product quality testing.
