• Program Description

  This program is a continuation of the conversation from the September 18th, 2024 AABB eCast “Addressing Common Nonconformances from AABB and How to Prevent Them”. It will delve into the AABB Standard 2.0, a most common nonconformance for Resources. AABB Standard 2.0 themes with case studies to be presented by AABB’s accreditation and standards team. AABB standards and actual descriptions from assessment summary reports with documented nonconformances and objective evidence will be highlighted. The speakers will then expand discussion on tools used to prevent future nonconformances. Finally, AABB staff will discuss AABB resources for continuous process improvement.

  Learning Objectives

  After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify Common themes involved with AABB Nonconformances to Standard 2.0-Resources: The facility shall have policies, processes, and procedures to ensure the provision of adequate resources to perform, verify, and manage all activities.
  • Describe the quality tools available on the AABB website and how they are best applied in a systematic approach to minimize and mitigate any identified nonconformances.
  • Discuss example scenarios strengths and weaknesses in the application of identified quality tools.
  • Describe Processes and Procedures meeting AABB Standard 2.0.

  Faculty Biographies

  Christopher Bocquet serves as the Senior Director for Standards and Quality Initiatives at AABB. In this role Christopher oversees all AABB Standards Committees as they work to create new editions of AABB Standards and associated Guidance documents.

  Sheri Goertzen serves as the Transfusion Service Supervisor at Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, California. Ms. Goertzen holds multiple certifications including MLS(ASCP) and CLS(CA) in 1979, BB(ASCP) certified in 1987, and ASQ(CQA) certified in 2013. Ms. Goertzen has served as an AABB assessor since 1998 and has been very active on many AABB committees over the years including the AABB eLearning Committee, AABB Annual Meeting Education Committee, AABB BB/TS Standards Committee, AABB Education Advisory Committee, AABB Education Program Committee, AABB Accreditation Program Committee, and the AABB Transfusion Service Accreditation Program Unit.

  Tracie Nichols serves as a Director of Compliance and Domestic Outreach within AABB’s Accreditation and Quality department. Prior to joining AABB, she worked as a Technical Specialist at West Virginia University Hospitals Blood Bank and Cellular Processing and prior to that as a Laboratory Generalist for the Wedgewood Family Practice. Ms. Nichols was ASCP certified in 2000 and SBB certified in 2011. Ms. Nichols received a Master’s in Clinical Laboratory Science from Michigan State University, a Specialty in Blood Bank Certificate from Dayton Community Blood Center, and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from West Virginia University.

  Melanie Sloan serves as AABB’s Senior Director of Accreditation and Quality and previously served as an AABB Lead Quality Assessor. Prior to joining the AABB team, she held many positions with the U.S. Army including Health Analyst in Support of U.S. Army Africa Northrup Grumman, Military Blood Bank Officer, and Clinical Laboratory Officer. Ms. Sloan holds multiple certifications including NCA certified in 1992, ASCP (MT) certified in 1992, SBB certified in 1999, and ASQ(CQA) certified in 2002. Ms. Sloan holds a Master of Science and Specialist in Applied Biology-Immunohematology from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Ohio University.
