AABB’s Transfusion Safety and Patient Blood Management (TS/PBM) Subsection recently released the latest article in its “PBM Column” series, “How Do I Select Evidence-Based Transfusion Thresholds for Implementing Patient Blood Management With Red Blood Cells?

In this complimentary resource, Deborah Tolich, DNP, RN, from Cleveland Clinic Health System, discusses how institutions interested in building a patient blood management (PBM) program can establish standards or benchmarks from which to measure their program’s performance.

The column begins with a discussion of evidence in support of restrictive and liberal transfusion thresholds followed by an overview of clinical indications for transfusion. Tolich also discusses adherence measures that PBM programs can use to evaluate their performance.

Additional PBM resources are available in AABB’s PBM Toolkit.
