Biden Signs Bill Ending COVID-19 National Emergency

April 11, 2023

President Joe Biden signed a bill passed by House Republicans on Monday terminating the national emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Terminating the national emergency will end the use of certain waivers for federal health programs designed to help health care providers during the height of the pandemic.

The Biden administration previously announced plans to lift the national emergency and a public health emergency (PHE) declaration on May 11. The PHE remains in effect. The Food and Drug Administration published a Federal Register notice last month that addresses the future of 72 COVID-19-related guidance documents still in effect as the agency prepares for the end of the COVID-19 PHE.
